CASE STUDY: Louisiana Family Recovery Corps

In the days after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, thousands of Louisiana residents were left in need of housing, education, job training, mental and physical heath assistance; among many other needs. Several local and national relief organizations became active in the region to fill many of these needs.

They faced the difficulty of a multitude of providers attempting to supply relief assistance in over 100 locations throughout the state of Louisiana.

CORE was used to coordinate provider organizations with Louisiana Family Recovery Corps case workers in the field. After meeting with individuals or families with needs, the case workers refer the individual or family's case to the providers in the system. Providers have the ability to respond to the request of refer to another provider that can better fulfill the needs.

The Recovery Corps programs are based on principles of mutual responsibility, accountability and partnerships with disaster affected individuals and families. The Recovery Corps began after hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005 to provide citizens affected by this disaster with access to resources that will assist their recovery. The Recovery Corps helps Louisiana residents with children’s services, housing, education, emotional well being and employment.
